Research projects

The research projects in which I have been Scientific Supervisor or Principal Investigator involve basic and applied research in the main areas of my interest, namely Physics of the Lithosphere , Seismology & Applied Geophysics.

In the context of these projects (in different topics), several PhD and M.Sc. theses were carried out, as well as post-doctoral research of various collaborators of mine.

Application projects

Application projects involve the use of research and tools developed in the research projects on practical problems concerning the man-made and natural environment. The main projects I have worked on include:

-Seismicity, active fault studies, and seismic hazard assessment for major technical constructions such as pipelines (e.g. TAP, Bourgas-Alexandroupolis), dams (e.g. Ilarion dam, Nestorio dam, Xamokerasa dam, etc.).

-Applied geophysical applications projects related to special studies, such as assessment geological-geotechnical setting (TAP pipeline, etc.), soil and rock-mass dynamic and static elastic properties for dam foundation (Gratini dam, Ilarion dam, etc.), major technical construction (Thessaloniki metro line, Nestos Egnatia highway bridge, etc.). Also, application for Solar parks (soil resistivity and dynamic  elastic properties)

-Microzonation studies, involving seismic hazard assessment, geophysical measurements (Vs30 estimation, crosshole, downhole, MASW, 1D/2D Refraction, ERT tomographies) for soil characterization and zonation purposes, estimation of 1D/2D/3D soil response using advanced waveform modeling approaches.

-Application of single and array noise and earthquake recording site response studies for geological/geophysical structure and microzonation purposes (Thessaloniki, Chania, Grevena, Karditsa, etc.), including novel 3D applications for basins.

-A posteriori geophysical studies for dam rockfill characterization (Polyfyto dam), geophysical-archaeometrical investigations for major technical constructions (e.g., fault identification and 2D geometry of overburden for the Thessaloniki metro, ancient Athens relics detection for the Athens Metro, etc.)
